The Ethics of Street Photography – Revisited

Tweet Black Man Pender by Fred Herzog (Equinox Gallery) Yesterday, the article “The Ethics of Street Photography,” was published by Joerg Colberg. For those following the Conscientious blog, it doesn’t take long to discover the writer is not a fan of street photography. But, mostly, Colberg has it right. Of course, the article did not condemn the entire... [MORE]

Garry Winogrand: More

Tweet Photograph by John Goldsmith / ‘More’ (Vancouver, Canada) Garry Winogrand didn’t say goodbye when he died. Instead, he left a parting gift of 6,500 exposed but undeveloped rolls of film. That amount of self control, to not look at your pictures for years, on your LCD or otherwise, would seem unbearable for most. Excruciating, even,... [MORE]

Art Gallery: Dream Big

Tweet Photograph by John Goldsmith / Vancouver Art Gallery As a kid, I remember visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). That Diego Rivera mural is still etched into my consciousness from a primary school visit. It was grand and befitting to the dreams of the Motor City. In contrast, the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) is stuffed... [MORE]

Chera & Jeff: Vancouver Wedding at UBC Boathouse

Tweet I was so happy to be a part of Chera and Jeff’s wedding. What a fabulous couple, family, and friends. There were so many smiles and (mini) celebrations within the celebration itself. As C & J were planning their wedding, they considered hiring me as their photographer but having a professional photographer was becoming less important... [MORE]

Mama, Please Don’t Take My Viewfinder Away

Tweet Brookelyn, “My Pretty Little Flower of a Girl,” in Melbourne, Australia. Not to be a gear-head, technophobe, or just a bitter curmudgeon, but here is my rant: I finally realized why I dislike cameras without a proper viewfinder. Some people complain they can’t view an LCD in bright sunlight. Others complain about problems of... [MORE]

The Last Pull – Photography, Coffee, Process

Tweet Five years ago, shortly after our twin daughters were born, my wife bought me an Italian espresso machine. If the generous birthday gift didn’t come with a handwritten note about my declining energy levels needing a significant boost, this offering was clearly a sign of billboard proportions. As is the case with any new... [MORE]

The Best Thing I Ever Did Was (and Is!) Professional Photography

Tweet The popular PetaPixel published a story about fellow British Columbia landscape photographer, Jonathan Coe, who recently gave up his craft. In “The Best Thing I Ever Did Was Quit Professional Photography,” Jonathan describes why he discarded the trade of making pictures of people because he wasn’t taking the kinds of photos he is passionate about. He... [MORE]

The “Fishbowl” Green Roof: Impressionism and Modernism in East Vancouver

Tweet Tania of Green Elevations in the garden of an East Vancouver green roof. It’s been nearly two years since I was first commissioned to photograph this East Vancouver home near Charles Dickens school. As a documentary photography project, it also examines how processing impresses emotions and memories. The project debuted on the Strange.rs website on 1 May 2012. During the course of a month, the photographs evolved transitioning to a dated view. The original photos are now gone and only a vestige of the original project. What is left behind are the faded r[MORE]

Fred Herzog Retrospective

We in Vancity may not know it yet but the city’s people have been blessed – twice-over. The first blessing was a trailblazing documentary photographer who was sufficiently curious about his fellow citizens to photograph them in real, unposed situations. The second blessing came by way of a local gallery (The Equinox Gallery) unveiling of a phenomenal new venue, the Equinox Project Space, featuring this same photographer’s work. Today, I had the pleasure of viewing Fred Herzog’s photograp[MORE]

La$ Vega$ Shoot$

Tweet Copyright Martin Parr/Magnum Photos (Las Vegas, USA) It was after reading a small’ish tidbit from Sunday’s NY Times Magazine that got me thinking about numbers.
